Rotary District 5110 Conference Highlights

The 2011 District Conference was a great success. Rotary International President, Ray Klinginsmith, visited the conference on the final Sunday. In his address to the audience, Mr. Klinginsmith expressed, “…adding the fifth Avenue of Service will facilitate our quest to make the youth and young adult programs even Bigger, Better, and Bolder in the future.”

The Group Study Exchange (GSE) teams from Peru and Italy had a chance to visit with RI President Klinginsmith. Both teams at the District Conference provided Rotarians a great opportunity to learn about their country. The GSE program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country’s culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

Other highlights from the conference include a haircut worth almost $16,000. PDG Bob Kings challenged the audience: raise $5,000 for PolioPlus and The Rotary Foundation and he would shave his hair.

Soon Springfield RC PP Bill Grile was challenged also to cut his hair. At the end, both were shaved bald and Sunday’s audience raised $15,984.00. Visit here to contribute to PolioPlus and The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Committed To Water and Sanitation Issues

This week’s Photo Friday features a new pump provided by the International H2O Collaboration at a launch ceremony in Ghana in May. The International H2O Collaboration is a partnership between Rotary International and the U.S Agency For International Development (USAID). Launched in 2009, the International H2O Collaboration works to implement long-term, sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in the developing world.

Villages in four regions of Ghana are being equipped with ventilated pit latrines, showers, and boreholes featuring hand pumps and mechanized pipes through the efforts of dozens of Rotary clubs in Latin America, North America, and Ghana. The first phase of the partnership has focused on three countries: Ghana, the Philippines, and the Dominican Republic.

The International H2O Collaboration is an example of Rotary’s dedication to water and sanitation issues, an area of focus under The Rotary Foundation’s Future Vision Plan.

In Ghana, Rotarians are working with committees in about 100 communities to change sanitation behaviors and provide training on maintaining the new equipment. The committees are responsible for establishing fees for water use and using the money collected to operate and maintain the pumps.

Rotarians interested in water and sanitation can attend a workshop on the International H2O Collaboration, moderated by Thorfinnson, on 24 May at the 2011 RI Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group will also host a fourth annual World Water Summit on 20 May at the New Orleans Marriott.

2011 Auction Raises More Than $25,000 in Scholarships

On Friday, February 25, the Eugene Airport Rotary hosted its annual auction to raise funds for deserving high school seniors to attend college. Thanks to your generous support this year, our club will distribute more than $25,000 in scholarships. This brings our total scholarship distribution to $222,600, helping about 213 students over 15 years.

Scholarship recipients are able to renew their funds up to three times during their college career. Thus, for some students, Airport Rotary has provided scholarship monies for all four years of their college career.

Since the application procedure lacks a grade point average requirement, Airport Rotary considers and awards scholarships to special needs students. High school counselors are instructed to look for deserving students who might be overlooked by other scholarship programs that do have a grade point average requirement.

Brandi Smith of KEZI kept the crowd alive as our emcee at this year’s event. Smith and KEZI 9 NEWS kindly auctioned lunch for two at Oregon Electric Station with Smith for fun and good conversation.

At this year’s auction, we had current scholarship recipient and UO junior Rachelle Cochran speak to the audience about the impact of the scholarships over the years. “The Rotary has not only helped me financially but has also shown me how much philanthropic service can touch a person’s life… it has definitely helped pave my path.”

Rachelle was interviewed by Brandi Smith, which received some airtime on the local news broadcast just prior to the auction.

Next year’s auction will surpass the $250,000 in total fund raising and it will be a milestone for our club. Considering our club has only 38 members, these are impressive totals. Airport Rotary thanks you for your continued contributions to our club and resilient efforts in serving others in our community and around the world.

ABC News Notices Rotary’s Efforts To Eradicate Polio

Rotary Promotes Peace Through Scholarship

Applications for Rotary Peace Fellowships for those applying in 2011 are now available on the District Peace Fellowship website. We can change lives by identifying outstanding non Rotarians with at least 3-5 years of experience in fields related to peace and conflict resolution.

Think big! Returned Peace Corps volunteers? Someone in the local police force? Public administrators? Environmental engineers? Immigration experts? Educators? Someone you met while working on a project in a developing nation? Rotarians should reach out to candidates who demonstrate a commitment to peace and conflict resolution through academic, volunteer, or professional experience, as well as outstanding leadership abilities and high academic achievement.

The Rotary Peace Fellowship program provides professionals from a variety of countries with the opportunity to study at one of six leading universities around the world in Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution.

Rotary Peace Fellows are leaders promoting national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict throughout their lives, in their careers, and through service activities. Fellows can earn either a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field, or a three-month professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution. Graduates become Rotary Peace Fellows, able to be part of tomorrow’s solution in promoting greater tolerance and cooperation among peoples worldwide.

Rotarian and Polio Survivor, Ed McDunn, Shares His Story

Rotary Colleagues –

I want to share a great article that appeared on the front page of the Life section in the Eugene Register-Guard on February 21.

Ed is a wonderful friend and Rotarian in my club. The first we heard him talk about his polio history was when he gave his Bio as part of our Red Badge program – we were stunned, amazed, and moved beyond words when we heard about what he went through and his hard work to do what the doctors said he couldn’t do. This article only touches the surface of Ed’s determination and accomplishment!

After hearing him at our club, I asked if he would be willing to speak to other clubs, which he eagerly agreed to do. He has spoken to many clubs in our district in Oregon and to clubs in Washington as he traveled on business. This led to his invitation to speak at the district conference.

Ed is a remarkable man, who counts many accomplishments in his professional life – he would rather talk about the urgency to eradicate polio.

I hope you find this article interesting. I’m so pleased that Glenda Gordon, the Foundation Chair for our club (Eugene Airport) was able to get such a wonderful, prominent article into a newspaper that has not previously been interested in publishing any Rotary articles. This PR is outstanding!

Rotary Members Can Earn Double Recognition for Online Contributions on February 23

In honor of Rotary’s birthday on 23 February, online contributions of US$100 or more to the Annual Programs Fund will receive double recognition credit. To be eligible for the credit, Rotarians must be registered in the secure Member Access section of www.rotary.org . The registration process can take 24 hours, so register before 23 February.

Making a secure online gift is the most cost-effective and efficient way to support The Rotary Foundation’s life-changing programs. February is World Understanding Month! This month includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary, which was held on February 23, 1905, and is now designated World Understanding and Peace Day.

This month’s newsletter also includes information about the 2011 District 5110 Conference at The Mill Casino Hotel & RV Park in North Bend from April 28 to May 1. Peace is the theme for this year’s conference, something of most importance with what is happening in Egypt the last few weeks.

On Monday, January 31, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation invites you to watch a webcast about the extraordinary progress in the fight to eradicate polio. The webcast will air on www.gatesfoundation.org at 6:30 am PST, after which it will be available in its entirety on the website.

The webcast will present a powerful case for the value of vaccines. Gates, along with other global leaders, will discuss what the past can teach us about protecting children around the world from polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases. ABC World News anchor Diane Sawyer will moderate the event.

Rotary’s $200 Million Challenge is The Rotary Foundation’s response to two grants totaling $355 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help eradicate polio.
