“Adopt a Village” Project in Sere Maundo village

In 2007, the Sere Parish was a recipient of a Rotary grant that created a well for safe water, provided treated mosquito nets for children, and developed two fish ponds. The Tororo Uganda Rotary Club and international partners, the Rotary Clubs of Eugene Airport, Eugene Southtowne, Springfield, and Lakeview joined together to create a follow up project in 2009.

Sere Maundo, Uganda is located approximately 20 miles from Tororo. There are about 300 households in the village of 2,300 people. More than 86 percent of the population survive on subsistence farming, which leaves no means of earning money to purchase high quality protein to supplement their diet.  Many villagers are hungry and have inadequate diets, which puts them at a higher risk for disease. Hunger also leads to a lack of energy and sometimes a lack of full development of mind and body. The growing population has led to intense land fragmentation and low productivity.

The sponsoring Rotary clubs hope to improve the current situation in Sere Maundo by implementing the 2009 project. The proposed project will improve access to the water for more people, create a capacity to manufacture poultry and fish feed within the village, and create a revolving loan fund to provide opportunities for villagers to purchase animals or start small businesses. The 2009 project will address poverty issues by generating economic well-being and promoting health and better nutrition.
